Junior Youth Speaks - For Primary Schools

Many District 1100 CLubs support Rotary Youth Speaks and in 2007/08 very successfully too, for we provided a team in the national final. That competition is for 12 to 18 year old secondary school students.
Some Clubs, however, through excellent working relationships with Junior Schools, have supported a junior version of Youth Speak, including the Chipping Campden and Thornbury Clubs.  They would like to link with other clubs to hold a district Junior Youth Speaks final, which would be a national first.
Mike Jelley (Chipping Campden) has provided the following simple but useful guidelines for a Junior Youth Speaks competition.
1. This competition is designed to compliment work already undertaken in schools, hopefully providing interest and enjoyment for pupils, parents and staff alike.
2. Open to 5/6 year pupils, the competition requires individual boys or girls ( not teams) to speak on a specific topic which has been provided by the sponsoring Rotary Club. e.g. Hobbies, My street or village, My best day etc.
3. Schools should organise a preliminary contest, the winner going forward to a school or inter school final which should be an evening, non-uniform occasion with parents and friends.
4. How to run a final.
On arrival each pupil draws to ascertain the order of speaking.
Pupils should not be identified by name or school before they speak and speak for no more than 5 minutes.
Three judges ( independant from schools) should judge each contestant for standard of grammar, clarity, expression of ideas, use and richness of vocab, and general demeanour.
Prizes should include a trophy for winning pupil and school as well as gifts and certificates for all competitiors.
The above is not prescriptive. Clubs may want to change any part of it. But if we manage to gather enough interest for a District final then of course the rules will have to standardise.
Please let Mike Jelley or Richard Fox know if your club intends to run a competition and of course don’t hesitate to contact them if you have questions.
